What Is Gemini Agent?

Gemini Agent is Google's answer to a simple question: what if your AI assistant could actually do things instead of just suggesting them? Launched as an experimental feature inside Gemini Advanced in early 2026, it moves beyond chatbot conversation into genuine task execution.

The core idea is straightforward. You give Gemini Agent a request like "find three flights to Tokyo under $800 next month, then draft an email to my travel group with the options." The agent breaks that into steps: it browses the web for flights, compares prices, formats the results, opens Gmail, drafts the email, and then pauses for your approval before sending.

This confirmation step is central to the design. Google calls it "human-in-the-loop" - the agent plans and prepares, but you press the button. In our testing (May 2026), this worked reliably for email, calendar, and task creation. The agent never sent something we did not explicitly approve.

Gemini Agent runs on Google's Gemini 2.5 model and connects to Google's ecosystem through native APIs. That means it does not use screen-scraping or browser automation to interact with Gmail or Calendar. Key Features of Gemini Agent

Gemini Agent's feature set revolves around doing, not just answering. Here is what it handles in practice.

Multi-step task execution. You describe a goal in natural language, and the agent breaks it into sequential steps. "Research the top 5 project management tools, create a comparison in a Google Doc, and add a reminder to review it Friday" becomes three distinct actions executed in order. In our testing, it handled 3-4 step chains reliably. Chains of 6+ steps sometimes lost context partway through.

Live web browsing. The agent searches the web in real time using Google Search infrastructure. It pulls current prices, reads articles, and compiles findings. This is not cached knowledge - it is live data. Research quality is noticeably stronger than competitors because it is drawing from Google's search index directly.

Gmail integration. Draft, reply, search, and organize emails. The agent reads your inbox context to craft relevant responses. It handled tone matching well in our tests - replies to casual threads stayed casual, and professional emails remained formal.

Calendar management. Schedule meetings, check availability, move appointments, and set reminders. It cross-references your existing schedule before proposing times. One useful behavior: when we asked it to "schedule a team sync next week," it checked all participants' availability through Google Calendar sharing.

Drive, Keep, and Tasks. Create documents, organize files, add notes to Keep, and populate your task list. The Drive integration is useful for research workflows - the agent can create a new doc and fill it with structured findings from web research.

Google Maps and YouTube. Plan routes, find businesses, and locate relevant videos. These are lighter integrations. Maps works well for "find the nearest coffee shop open past 9pm" type queries. YouTube search is functional but not transformative.

Confirmation checkpoints. Before any action that changes state - sending an email, creating a calendar event, modifying a file - the agent shows you exactly what it plans to do and waits for approval.

Gemini Agent is not available as a standalone product. You access it through Gemini Advanced, which requires the Google One AI Premium plan.

Who Should (and Shouldn't) Use Gemini Agent

Use Gemini Agent if:

You live inside Google's ecosystem. If Gmail is your primary email, Google Calendar runs your schedule, and Drive stores your files, Gemini Agent delivers genuine time savings. The native integrations are seamless in a way that third-party tools cannot match. Small business owners and freelancers who standardized on Google Workspace will get the most value.

You want AI to handle repetitive multi-step tasks. Email triage, meeting scheduling, research compilation, and task management are the sweet spots. If you spend 30+ minutes daily on these admin tasks, the $19.99/month pays for itself quickly.

Skip Gemini Agent if:

You use Microsoft 365, Slack, Notion, or other non-Google tools as your primary stack. The agent has minimal ability to interact outside Google apps. If your workflow spans multiple platforms, you need a different solution. Browser Use handles cross-platform browser automation if that is your situation.

You need complex automation with conditional logic. Gemini Agent handles linear task chains well, but "if X then Y, otherwise Z" branching logic is not its strength. For sophisticated workflows, dedicated automation platforms remain more capable.

You are privacy-sensitive about AI reading your email and calendar. The agent requires broad access to your Google account data. Google states this data is used to execute your requests and improve the model. If that makes you uncomfortable, this is not the tool for you.

How Does Gemini Agent Compare to Perplexity AI?

These two tools overlap in research but diverge in execution. Perplexity AI is a dedicated AI search engine. Gemini Agent is an AI assistant that can also search.

For pure research quality and citation accuracy, Perplexity wins. Its entire product is built for finding and presenting information with sources. Gemini Agent's research is good - benefiting from Google's search index - but it does not consistently cite sources with the same rigor.

Where Gemini Agent pulls ahead is the "then what?" After researching, it can draft the email, create the document, or schedule the follow-up meeting. Perplexity gives you answers. Gemini Agent gives you answers and then acts on them. That end-to-end capability is genuinely useful if your workflow stays inside Google apps.

Our Testing Process

We tested Gemini Agent daily for two weeks (May 2026) across real work scenarios: email triage, meeting scheduling, research compilation, and task management. All testing was done through Gemini Advanced on the Google One AI Premium plan.

Test scenarios included: drafting 15+ emails from natural language prompts, scheduling 8 multi-participant meetings, compiling 5 research reports into Google Docs, and managing daily task lists in Google Tasks. We deliberately tested edge cases - vague instructions, multi-step chains with 6+ actions, and requests requiring information from multiple Google apps.

We tracked success rate (did the agent complete the task correctly?), confirmation accuracy (did the preview match what it actually did?), and time saved versus doing it manually. We have not tested the enterprise Workspace tier or API access.
